City Information

Singapore is made up of not just one island but a main island with 63 surrounding islets. The main island has a total land area of 682 square km.

However, its compact size belies its economic growth. In just 150 years, Singapore has grown into a thriving centre of commerce and industry. Its former role as an entrepot has diminished, as the nation has increased its manufacturing base.

Singapore is the busiest port in the world with over 600 shipping lines sending super tankers, container ships and passenger liners to share the busy waters with coastal fishing vessels and wooden lighters.

One of the world's major oil refining and distribution centres, Singapore is a major supplier of electronic components and a leader in shipbuilding and repairing. It has also become one of the most important financial centres of Asia, with more than 130 banks. Business dealings are facilitated by Singapore's superb communications network which links the nation to the rest of the world via satellite, 24-hour telegraph and telephone systems.

Singapore's strategic location, excellent facilities, fascinating cultural contrasts and tourist attractions contribute to its success as a leading destination for both business and pleasure. (City information adapted from http://www.visitsingapore.com)

Public Transportation in Singapore

Singapore has a wonderful public transportation system. Taxis are relatively inexpensive and plentiful. You can find a taxi at one of the numerous taxi stands located around the city, you can flag down a taxi, or you can call for a taxi. If you call ahead for a taxi there will be an additional charge of approximately three to five dollars (depending on the time of day).

The MRT (the Singapore subway system) is also a useful way to get around town. If you are staying more than a day or two, it will be worthwhile to purchase an Eazi Link card that you can add money to as needed. Be sure to collect your $5 deposit for the card by turning it in when you leave!

Calling Home

The cheapest way to call overseas from Singapore is by using the 019 exchange. Simply dial 019 plus the number you are trying to reach. If you would like to call the office in Greensboro, for example, you would call 019 1 336 288 7210. 019 calls to the U.S. cost about .19 cents (Sing) per minute. To call Brussels, you would also dial 019 to get a reduced rate.

Time Differences Between Singapore and Other Countries

China - same time zone
Australia - same time zone
Japan/Korea - 1 hour

Tipping

Tipping is not necessary in Singapore. Most restaurants tack on a 10% service charge to all orders. If the 10% is not added, tipping is at your discretion, but not obligatory.

Restaurant Recommendations

Singapore has an abundance of good restaurants. You have your pick of nearly any type of food at various costs and levels of formality. Check with the receptionist in the office for a list of recommended restaurants.

Tourist Information

Check out the following website for tourist information on Singapore: www.visitsingapore.com. In addition, maps and information is available at our office. Some of our favorite activities when visiting include: The Night Safari (www.nightsafari.com.sg) Shopping on Orchard Road, Sentosa Island, China Town, Little India, the Botanical Gardens, and no trip to Singapore would be complete without a trip to the Long Bar at the famous Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling.
