CCL Launches Flagship Program for Leaders in Africa

A participant in a recent Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®) workshop in Uganda said, "Where you come from, this leadership teaching may result in better management, better business practices. But here, here in Uganda, this teaching has the ability to save lives."

In response to this aspiration echoed by many others on the continent, the Center for Creative Leadership is bringing its flagship Leadership Development Program (LDP)® to Africa, in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch Business School Executive Development Ltd in South Africa.

CCL and USB Executive Development Ltd. will launch the Leadership Development Program the first week of August 2008 in Stellenbosch. Participants will learn how to give and receive feedback, lead change in their organisations, build effective relationships develop and coach others and manage themselves. It's the beginning of a life-long journey in applying leadership lessons to real life.

"We're building on the foundations of CCL's Global Voice of Leadership project in Uganda and Kenya," says Kim Lafferty of CCL-EMEA, "and also on the enthusiastic response to our research on developing globally responsible leaders presented recently at a conference in the Human Resources sphere in Sun City."

CCL's Simon Rweyongoza, project manager for Africa, observes: "When taking a closer look at most Africans' day-to-day lives, one can see that possibilities and opportunities are either lost or forgotten simply because of a lack of leadership skill. Our work on the continent so far convinces us that our leadership programs can make a difference."

"With its focus on leadership underpinned by decades of research, the Center for Creative Leadership is unique among executive education providers," says Frik Landman, CEO, USB Executive Development Ltd. "When the deliberation around leadership is only an intellectual exercise, it serves none but the esoteric few. The laboratory of leadership is life and African life tests our leadership daily. I'm convinced that CCL will help us to tap into the vitality and spirit of our own emerging leaders."

A key aspect of CCL's involvement will be in training, certifying and quality- controlling South African coaches to CCL global standards so that future programs can be staffed by local coaches and CCL faculty from EMEA. This potent combination of local context and world class leadership expertise is very exciting.

"Our alumni typically describe LDP as a life-changing experience, personally and professionally," says Kim Lafferty. "We think this first African LDP will be life-changing for our faculty as well, all of whom are donating their time because of their strong belief in the value of this program at this time and in this particular location. This is in keeping with CCL's mission to work for the benefit of society worldwide."
