Organizations are seeking to be more innovative in response to the challenges of our times. Developing a sustainable organizational capacity for innovation requires a systemic approach that deals with the cultural, environmental, and systems issues needed to not only stimulate new ideas but channel those ideas into valuable products, services, and processes. This presentation will focus on CCL and Continuum's work on creative environments and the presenters' knowledge and experience in taking ideas into action.

About the Presenters

David Magellan Horth David is President of the board of trustees of the Creative Education Foundation. He is considered worldwide to be a subject matter expert on organizational creativity. As an active member of the international community of creativity practitioners, David presents at major, executive events and international conferences. He led the design of the Creative Education Foundation's Global Odyssey project targeted at international teenagers. David is visiting research fellow at the Center for Entrepreneurship at Greenwich University in London, England. He has authored numerous publications in the leadership and creativity field. In August 2003, The Leader's Edge received an award from the Banff Centre for the Arts for its contribution to the connection between arts and business leadership. David is also co-author of a CCL® product used to support group sense-making called Visual Explorer: Picturing Approaches to Complex Challenges. David's background experience includes 21 years in the computer industry; he began as a research and development engineer and emerged as a strategist specializing in creativity and innovation. During this time, he managed both hardware and software development teams and major technology programs and served as marketing manager and trainer of quality improvement and innovation. He joined the Center from the human resources division of the Centre for Consultancy in England. David describes himself as an artist-in-training. He enjoys drawing and writing poetry, and his special gift is music. He plays a variety of instruments ranging from African drums to piano, and folk guitar to didgeridoo, a native Australian aboriginal instrument. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Surrey in England. |

Dan Buchner, Vice President of Organizational Innovation As Vice President of Organizational Innovation at Continuum Dan directs interdisciplinary organizational innovation projects for leading organizations such as the Center for Creative Leadership. Prior to joining Continuum in 2000, Dan established Moen Incorporated's first Industrial Design Group and implemented the Moen Real World Lab, a simulated residential environment for consumer experience testing and research. He co-authored Moen's Innovation and Product Development Process resulting in the development of Moen's most successful products including the Monticello line, the OneTouch® faucet, and the Revolution® Showerhead. In 1998 as Vice President of Innovation and Design, Dan led the development of the PureTouch® water filtration faucet - an award-winning product that established Moen as the innovation leader in the industry. In 1999, Dan led a project of top international designers and engineers to address widespread water and sanitation issues facing rural South African communities. Sponsored by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, this project greatly influenced Dan's perspective on the power of design thinking and its potential impact on society. Dan's recent work has involved using design thinking as an economic, leadership and social development tool in emerging markets such as South Africa, El Salvador, Jordan, and India. As a member of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), Dan was named Chairman of IDSA's Design Management Section in 2002. Dan is currently the Innovator in Residence at the Creative for Creative Leadership. He is a lively speaker on topics including the creative corporation, principals of innovation, leading an innovative organization, and transforming your organization. Dan has been published in Innovations and Product Development Best Practices. He has been quoted in numerous publications such as the New York Times, BusinessWeek, ID magazine, A Whole New Mind, and the Boston Globe. Media appearances have included the Today Show and NBC Nightly News. Dan has won 11 design awards including a bronze and gold BusinessWeek IDEA award. In 1999 he was awarded the Innovator of the Year award by EDI. He holds over 25 US and Canadian design and mechanical patents. Dan holds a degree in industrial design from the Fanshawe School of Design. |
