Did you know ...
that empathy can boost job performance?

A CCL study underscored that the ability to understand what others are feeling is a skill that contributes to effective leadership.

The study analyzed data from 6,731 leaders from 38 countries who were rated by subordinates on their display of empathic emotion. Specifically, the managers were rated on how well they tended to:

  • Be sensitive to signs of overwork in others.
  • Show interest in the needs, hopes and dreams of other people.
  • Be willing to help an employee with personal problems.
  • Convey compassion toward them when other people disclose a personal loss.

Each manager was also rated by a boss on items that measure job performance.

The findings were consistent across the sample: Managers who show more empathy toward direct reports are viewed as better performers by their bosses.

While the study did not look at the reason for this connection, the authors say that empathetic leaders are able to effectively build and maintain relationships — a critical part of leading organizations anywhere in the world.

Further details on CCL's study, including cross-cultural insights, are available in the white paper "Empathy in the Workplace: A Tool for Effective Leadership."
