2009 News Release
Grant Helps CCL Create New Leadership Tools for Underserved Populations

April 2009 - Greensboro, N.C. - An anonymous $75,000 grant is helping the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®) make leadership development more accessible and affordable to underserved populations in the U.S. and around the world. The grant supports CCL's Leadership Beyond Boundaries (LBB) initiative and provides funding to design, develop and launch new toolkits and curricula.

"This funding enables us to reach many more people who have never had the opportunity to develop their potential as leaders" says David Altman, executive vice president for Research, Innovation & Product Development at CCL. "We want to ensure that we can develop leaders at all levels, in all sectors and geographies, regardless of their level of income or education."

The new grant money will be used to complete and launch the following projects:

  • An Early Leadership Development Toolkit for Underprivileged Youth, which would be offered to school and community groups worldwide to help underprivileged youth develop essential soft skills to increase their employment potential and effectiveness in the workplace.
  • A Social Entrepreneurship Curriculum to develop leaders who can effectively drive social change. This curriculum guide will be made available to non-governmental, community and educational organizations worldwide.
  • A Global Leadership Wisdom Tool based on traditional parables, fables and stories passed down the generations to teach important lessons and values.
  • Leveraging Technology for Leadership Development using online platforms and mobile technology such as Second Life, iTunes, and mobile phones to enable increased access, scale, affordability, and continuity for leadership development.

Over the past year, the LBB initiative has extended leadership development to a broad spectrum of populations - from community health leaders in the Caribbean and Africa, to microfinance organizations and women's self-help groups in Asia and Africa, to minority high school students and high-potential college students in the United States, to high school principals and police officers in India, to non-governmental organizations and government institutions in the United States, Africa and Asia, to orphans and street children in Africa and India, to social entrepreneurship organizations and programs.
